We are Nature: Iceland

..

It is critical that humans recognize that we are part of nature. When we exploit or pollute our environment, we are ultimately doing it to ourselves. Nature should be treated as we wish to be treated by others - with respect, care, and an understanding of both our capacities and our limits, rather than through exploitation and harm.

Art offers a way to reconnect with one another and with the environment we inhabit. It is difficult to neglect something once it is understood, and even harder once it is loved.

For We Are Nature, grass-root sculptures were installed at Deiglan Gallery in Akureyri, Iceland. In one installation, root-like faces appeared to emerge from, or descend into, black volcanic sand. Drawn into the sand were Icelandic runes traditionally associated with protection. In the second installation, the faces were placed among the branches of a small bush; its base encircled with barbed wire and planted in volcanic sand.

Following the exhibition, the sculptures were relocated to the Akureyri Botanical Gardens, where they were left in the snow to complete their natural cycle.
